Biomass Pellet Production Solutions

Today fuel pellets, and particularly wood pellets are in high demand, market growth is rapidly increasing, and demand is frequently out growing supply. More and more people are looking into pellet production and how pellets are produced.

At PelHeat we are manufactures of small scale pellet production units. We frequently get asked how pellets are made, what materials can be turned into pellets and what equipment is required. Therefore we have developed a guide on the equipment used in pellet production and the principles of the process. The guide covers equipment used in small and large scale production.

At PelHeat we are developing the PelHeat Mobile Pelletizer. The unit is a small scale mobile pellet plant for producing fuel pellets from a wide variety of biomass materials. Fuel Pellets can be made from a wide range of materials, collectively referred to as biomass. Some biomass is intentionally grown and other biomass is waste resources or excess resources left over from other activities. Below are some examples of biomass.

Wood

Wood pellets are currently the most popular form of biomass fuel pellets. They are produced from shaving and sawdust from the wood processing industry. There are vast resources of wood currently unused that could be processed into wood pellets. An example of this is wood chips from tree surgeons, Wood pellets are very popular due to their low ash content and corrosive properties.

Energy Crops

Energy crops is a collective term for biomass that is grown specifically to be turned into energy, this includes converting the crops to pellets. Some examples of energy crops are Miscanthus, Reed Canary Grass, Short Rotation Coppice (SRC), Switch Grass, Industrial Hemp and more. Energy crops are becoming popular as high yields can be obtained.

Food Crop Residues

When food crops are harvested there are residues that are left over from the process, for example straw. This includes Wheat Straw, Barley Straw, Corn Stalks and more. Turning food crop residues into fuel pellets could have benefits in producing cheaper food and fuel, while keeping food and fuel separate.

Other Biomass

Materials such are paper and cardboard can also be turned into fuel pellets. So as you can see there is large variety of biomass raw materials that can be processed into fuel pellets.

PelHeat Mobile Pelletizer

The unit is a small scale mobile pellet plant, the unit is equipped with its own power unit and designed to be easily moved from location to location. The primary components are a hammer mill, cyclone separator, bag hopper, screw auger, flat die pellet mill, Perkins diesel engine all mounted on a single axel trailer.

Biomass Pellets

Biomass pellets are a renewable fuel, which means the fuel source can be replaced unlike fossil fuels. Biomass is part of the carbon cycle, so when biomass pellets are burnt the carbon released is recaptured by the next biomass crops. Using biomass pellets is not only a cheaper way to heat but it also can play an important role in reducing global warming, reducing dependence on foreign oil, supporting local economies, making a better use of resources and waste resources.
